What We Do in the Shadows (2014) [Review]

Image
Director: Jemaine Clement ,  Taika Waititi Writer: Jemaine Clement, Taika Waititi Starring: Jemaine Clement, Taika Waititi, Jonny Brugh . See full cast members here .  Genre: Comedy, Horror, Mock Documentary Rating: Since it's a vampire movie, of course there is a lot of blood.  SYNOPSIS:  The lives of four modern day vampires living together in a flat in New Zealand are being documented by a filming crew.  First of all, this is a mock documentary or some would say mockumentary which means it is not real. It's a parody. Therefore, it is shot like a documentary where film crews follow the characters around and there are interviews.  This movie is indeed funny. The documentary style is executed well and really brings out the subtle comedic elements. The characters appears so serious about what they really are and it is very humorous to see. I mean, it's so weirdly funny to see a vampire doing the dishes and knitting and socia...

Seal Team Eight: Behind Enemy Lines (2014) [Review]

Image
Director: Roel Reiné Writer: Brendan Cowles , Shane Kuhn &  Roel Reiné Starring: Tom Sizemore , Lex Shrapnel , Anthony Oseyemi , Aurélie Meriel . See full cast members here .  Genre: Action, War.  Rating: Many gun fights. Contains violence and gore. Some nudity and sex scenes. SYNOPSIS:  Seal Team Eight is given an assignment to dismantle an illegal small army operation at Congo and save a valuable human asset. However, the operation proves to be leading to a larger and more dangerous mission that they must accomplish in 36 hours.  This movie is actually the fourth installment of the Behind Enemy Lines series and was released directly on Blu Ray in April 2014.  I have never watched the previous installments and I just came across this movie while browsing through some movies. I like war movies and action movies and IMDB  rated it 4.6 out of 10 stars so I guess I ought to give it a try.  Honestly, t...

Salvation (2014) [Review]

Image
Director: Kristian Levring Writer: Kristian Levring & Anders Thomas Jensen Starring: Mads Mikkelsen , Jeffrey Dean Morgan , Eva Green . See full cast members here .  Genre: Western, Action Rating: Western style gun fights. Contains violence but no gore. Some making out scenes.  SYNOPSIS:  Jon Jensen (Mads Nikkelsen) is a Danish soldier who seeks salvation in America. After seven years peacefully settling in an American town with his brother, he is finally be able to bring his wife and son to live with him. However, a gang of outlaws unleashes unspeakable terror upon his town and family, forcing Jon to avenge his family's death, alone.  This movie is a western directed by a Danish director, Kristian Levring, and the main character is played by a Danish, Mads Mikkelsen. A Danish western? Hmmm... As odd as it may sound, Salvation is actually a good, dark western movie. I honestly love it.  In terms of story, it is quite straightfor...

Kajaki (2014) [Review]

Image
"I didn't see a flash or feel a blast or heat, it was as if I'd stood on a banana skin." Director: Paul Katis Writer: Tom Williams Starring: David Elliot , Mark Stanley , Benjamin O'Mahony , Scott Kyle , Liam Ainsworth . See full cast members here .  Genre: War, Drama Rating: A lot of blood and open wounds. Not to mention, cursing.  SYNOPSIS: This movie is set near the Kajaki Dam in Afghanistan. Three British soldiers set out to disable a Taliban roadblock and then, one of them steps on a mine. Other soldiers come to help but the rescue attempt proves to be a dangerous one the area is full of mines.  First of all, I want all of you to know that Kajaki (also known as Kilo Two Bravo) is freaking suspenseful. It literally and figuratively had me at the edge of my seat! I cringed so hard, laughed and held my breath through out most of the movie because it is absolutely intense! Arghhh It starts off rather dull. This is most p...

Predestination (2014) [Review]

Image
"What if I could put him in front of you? The man that ruined your life. If I could guarantee that you'd get away with it, would you kill him?" Director: Michael Spierig & Peter Spierig (The Spierig Brothers) Writer:  Michael Spierig  &  Peter Spierig . Adapted from a short story All You Zombies by Robert A. Heinlein Starring: Ethan Hawke , Sarah Snook . See full cast members here .  Genre: Sci Fi, Drama Rating: Contains a brief sex scene, some non sexual nudity and a bit of violence An agent (Ethan Hawke) of a secret organization travels through time in order to stop the Fizzle Bomber who has killed many innocent lives.  The main attraction of this movie is in its story which can be described as a freakin mindfuck. The story starts literally with a boom and then progresses slowly until the second and final act. Honestly, the first act for me feels a bit draggy but as it enters the second act and finishing act, the long and dragg...

The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies (2014)

Image
The dwarves finally got rid of Smaug and reclaimed Erebor. Smaug fled and terrorized Laketown, forcing the people to abandon their homes and seek refuge from the dwarves. The Elves brought their army in order to reclaim their sacred treasures in Erebor. Sauron sent an army of Orcs to sneakily conquer Erebor in order to possess a strategic point for the upcoming war.  As the title suggests, this movie is about war.  There's not much of a plot in this final installation of The Hobbit series. The main conflict of this flick is on deciding which tribe to trust and knowing the real enemy. Once that is resolved, there's only one sole thing to do - FIGHT!  This movie rely so much on over elaborated fight scenes and over dramatic deaths - which is not necessarily bad. As a person who loves action movies, I really enjoy The Battle of the Five Armies. However, many complain that the fights are too long.  So I guess it comes down to whether you like long a...

Interstellar (2014)

Image
The earth was dying. Humanity was at stake. Cooper (Matthew McConaughey), a former NASA pilot, was 'chosen' to join NASA's Lazarus Project to find a new habitable world for mankind.  I was late to the party. Due to work and family commitment, I thought I wouldn't be able to catch this movie on the big screen. However, my wife and kid flew to Langkawi on the 25th of December and that gave me the chance to finally step into the cinemas once more after what it seemed like forever. Fortunately, there was one more cinema showing Interstellar at that time and it was the One Cinemas at Spectrum Mall, Ampang. I drove from Balakong to the mall for half an hour. That was how desperate I was to watch this movie. I had to see it. People were rambling about it being the movie of the year. I freakin' had to see it.  Funny story. The first and only showing for that particular day was at 10.00 am. I arrived at the ticket counter at 10.05 am. The funny (and a bit nerv...

The Hunger Games : Mockingjay Pt 1 (2014)

Image
Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) was saved from the grasp of The Capitol & President Snow  during the Quarter Quell by District 13 allies. Panem was in chaos as citizens of most districts rose in rebellion & The Capitol retaliated. Civil War broke out. Katniss was asked to join the crusade by being the Mockingjay - a symbol of hope & rebellion.  Honestly, this movie for me is a bit of a let down. I feel that it's a mistake making it two parts because it felt draggy and there are no climax and closure. It felt incomplete. But of course, fuck the viewers. What's more important is money making. That's how Hollywood roles.  The book version of Mockingjay is awesome. It's about Katniss dealing with her trauma... Okey, not just Katniss. All of the tributes too. Besides that, it is also about war. The effects of war. The reality of war. The strategy, the suspense, the fast paced guerilla warfare.  So, I was expecting more ...

Big Hero 6 (2014)

Image
Hiro Hamada (Ryan Potter) was a 14 year old robotics genius who loved robot fighting & planned on becoming a professional robot fighting contender. His brother, Tadashi (Daniel Henney) felt that Hiro was wasting his talents & tried to convince him to enrol himself into a university. In his effort to do so, Tadashi brought Hiro to the university science lab, introduced him to his friends; Fred (TJ Miller), Gogo Tomago (Jamie Chung), Wasabi (Damon Wayans Jr.) and Honey Lemon (Genesis Rodriguez), and Baymax (Scott Adsit), an inflatable personal healthcare companion robot. Then, a tragic accident happened & it drove Hiro to upgrade Baymax with advanced armor, weapons & combat skills so that he could find out what really happened. I was pretty excited about this movie because it's an end product of a collaboration between Disney and Marvel. To be honest, I've never heard of Big Hero 6 comics before they announced the movie. I'm more of a DC fan. I'm ...

Lucy (2014)

Image
Lucy ( Scarlett Johannson ) was a student studying at Taiwan and a fairly wild child. Her boyfriend (sort of) involved her with a Korean gangster syndicate's drug trafficking business and they forced her to deliver a packet of new drug. The drug somehow entered her body system and triggered her brain to reach its full potential.   I was pretty excited to watch this movie because I'm always interested in the concept of elevating one's potential by unlocking the unused parts of his/her brain. I already expressed it in my Limitless (2011) review.  Let me talk about the lead first. Scarlett Johannson. Unlike most men I know, I don't think of her as sexy. Probably because I'm more inclined to liking girls like Gal Gadot and Zoe Saldana. Her physique is not a problem though. I have a problem with her acting. It's not bad, but it's not to my liking mostly because she pouts her lips most of the time and the tone of her voice is rather flat. Overall...

X-Men : Days of Future Past (2014)

Image
In the future, mutants were hunted, to be killed or captured, by an advanced weapon, The Sentinels. A group of mutants were able to survive by manipulating a mind transfer ability where they could transfer a person's present consciousness to his/her past self to warn him/herself of future attacks. They use this ability, to transfer Wolverine's consciousness to the past so he could stop the crisis before it even happened. I'm pretty excited about Days of Future Past because First Class was really good. I expected that this latest installment to be better than the previous one. Furthermore, I'm a fan of Sentinels. Yes, I love the Sentinels! I think that they're worthy opponents to the X-Men. I wanted so much to see them in action since the first X-Men movie.  First of all, I wanna highlight that Fan Bingbing is so beautiful.  Okey, let me get serious and talk about the acting aspect. Every cast member did what they're supposed to do and they did...
