Wolf Children (2012) [Review]

Image
Original title: Ōkami Kodomo no Ame to Yuki (Wolf Children: Ame and Yuki) Director: Mamoru Hosoda Writer: Mamoru Hosoda, Satoko Okudera Starring: Aoi Miyazaki (voice), Haru Kuroki (voice), Yukito Nishii (voice). See full cast here Genre: Animation, Anime, Drama, Family Rating: Kids would love the animation but adults would understand the theme more. Contains some non-sexual nudity.  SYNOPSIS:  After her werewolf lover died suddenly, Hana is forced to take care of their two children. Being a single mother is tough but the fact that the children are werewolves makes it even harder for her. Unexpectedly, I am deeply touched by this anime movie. The greatest strength of this movie is in the story. Surely, the animation is flawless but the story? My oh my... The story touches my heart and convinces me that this is one of my favorite anime of all times, so far.  The story revolves around Hana who struggles to raise her children who are a hybr...

Jack Reacher (2012)

Image
A man with a military background was arrested for shooting five random victims... Instead of an attorney, he asked for Jack Reacher ( Tom Cruise ) who then dug deeper into the case with the help of  a lawyer named Helen ( Rosamund Pike )...  A little trivia - this movie is adapted from a book/graphic novel entitled One Shot by Lee Child... In terms of story, in my opinion, Jack Reacher is not an impressive crime drama movie... Towards the middle, I thought that it's more suitable to be made as a series like CSI or NCIS... There are plenty of crime drama series clichés such as analysing of evidence, searching of motive and the revealing of hidden agendas... However, that doesn't mean that this movie doesn't belong to the big screen... There are a few moments when the story blew surprises and twists... What I love the most is the action part... The collision of cars, Tom Cruise's sharp and wicked ass kicking moves and captivating marksman...

Life of Pi (2012)

Image
Pi Patel ( Suraj Sharma ) survived a shipwreck and cast away at sea with a grown Bengal tiger... Yes, a freakin tiger... When I first saw the title months ago, I thought that there's gonna be Mathematical stuff going on in this movie because of the lead's name - Pi ... Well, I thought wrong... There's an amusing story behind the main character's nickname which I won't spoil it for you...  Life of Pi is the type of movie which I would rather watch alone in my room, with no distraction, not because it's light porn but because it's very deep... What I mean is, there are hidden meanings behind the stories that Pi told... Very very philosophical... This movie brought me back to the moments when I learn about literature... It challenged me to think about the messages that the writer wanted to convey... Is it about religion? If it is, then what about it? or is it about relationships and saying goodbyes?  Basically, the storyline is aweso...

Rise of the Guardians (2012)

Image
Jack Frost ( Chris Pine ) searched the world for an identity and reason of existence... For so long, he has been alone and unnoticed by everyone, doing his own thing - causing blizzards and snow and throwing snowballs, making a mess... Well, that was until Pitch Black aka the Bogeyman ( Jude Law ) came and terrorized children's dreams...  We are living in an era where mythical stuff can be modernized into something cool and badass... Rise of the Guardians is the best example to describe that because they turn Santa Claus from a fat old fart with beard to a fat old fart with beard and tattoos and swords and badass looking sleigh! The idea is good and it's according to the taste today's young people...  Well, I can go easy on the movie and just say, "Hey, it's a children movie" and let the flaws pass... but, children don't read my blog... Adults do... So, I'm gonna say my opinion of this movie in adult me point of view... Trut...

Skyfall (2012)

Image
Bond, James Bond ( Daniel Craig ) was on a mission to retrieve a missing hard drive containing highly classified information that could bring down MI6 when he was shot by a fellow agent... Being 'dead' for a quite some time, he 'resurrected' and reported for duty as agent 007 went he learned that MI6 was under attack and in need of his assistant...  I have no love for James Bond movies, I honestly can say that... I watched a few of the Brosnan's version and liked them but didn't share any passion on them that I almost skipped Daniel Craig's... Out of boredom and the thought of how interesting Skyfall trailer looked, I watched Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace ... Those two intrigued me because Craig was so masculine, rough and tough that he performed so well especially in the action scenes...  While almost every movie buff out there screamed that this one is the best Bond movie ever, well, I would like to differ...  Personally, I thi...

Istanbul, Aku Datang! (2012)

Image
Dian (Lisa Surihani) came to Istanbul in hoping to sort of persuade her long time boyfriend, Azad (Tomok) to propose for marriage... In a twist of events, Dian found herself stuck in a same apartment with Harris (Beto Kusyairy)...  Maybe I was bored or maybe because there's no other movies to watch... Whatever the reason was, yes, I went out of norm and watched a Malay movie... A Lisa Surihani movie... Despite my scepticism towards local movies, I had to admit that Istanbul, Aku Datang! was rather a good watch... You see, one thing I don't like about Malay rom-coms is that the characters tend to try so hard to be funny and romantic in a very spastic and exaggerated way... However, the actors and actresses in this movie are very subtle and relaxed in their performance, thus making the story more believable and real... Lisa Surihani... I hated her in Ombak Rindu because her acting sucked big time... Nevertheless, the role she picked up for this mo...
